“Lest We Forget”

The silence and the darkness are broken by the sounds of gun fire and the whistle of mortars shells raining on the trenches.
Soldiers scrambling for cover and lay flat on their bellies with hands clasped to their helmets as they feel the vibration of every exploding shell, soil and dirt land on top of them where they lay
Silence fills the air once more as the screams and woeful cries can be heard throughout the land as soldiers pray, some for death to take them while others pray to survive the next wave of attacks from a relentless enemy
Soldiers not wounded or killed in this onslaught rise from the make shift graves called trenches to see the light of another dawn and attend to their fallen brothers in arms strewn along the deep path of the narrow gorges on the frontlines
The pain experienced by the wounded, the maimed, the crippled and the insane is more than any human can stand as they inhale the smell of death and gunpowder while holding broken bodies of countrymen until medical help arrive.
The things they will remember and will never forget are they faces of their friends and enemies
gasping for life before finally succumbing to their wounds inflicted so maliciously for tyranny and for freedom.
Long after the war has ended the demons and the horrors faced by each soldier is far worst than the war they fought.
While we fly our flags of freedom throughout a free world we really do forget the depth of sacrifice and bravery given by each woman and man that made it all possible.
The honour we bestow on the fallen and the living of that fiery hell is so minimal in comparison to what they gave.
Buy a poppy, give a moment of silence to listen to the hearts and souls of the fallen and thank the living sincerely for each day you do not have to fight for your freedom……

Not a poem but simply thoughts of gratitude and reflection by one grateful Canadian.
